The Department of Electrical Engineering is one of the pioneering departments of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Mizoram, established in July 2010 with the inception of the Institute under the mentorship of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur. Since its establishment, the department has been committed to providing quality education, promoting cutting-edge research, and developing skilled professionals to meet the evolving needs of academia, industry, and society.
The department currently offers B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programmes. The B.Tech. programme commenced in 2010 with an initial intake of 30 students, while the M.Tech. programme in Power Electronics and Drives was introduced in 2016 with an intake of 10 students. The department also offers a Ph.D. programme, providing opportunities for advanced research in diverse areas of Electrical Engineering.
The department is supported by a team of seven dedicated faculty members with expertise across various domains of Electrical Engineering. The faculty members actively engage in teaching, research, consultancy, and collaborative projects, contributing to the advancement of knowledge and technology.
The department strives to create an academically stimulating environment that fosters innovation, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. Emphasis is placed on strengthening students’ theoretical foundations through modern teaching methodologies, hands-on laboratory experience, industry interaction, and research-oriented learning. The curriculum is designed to equip graduates with the technical competence and professional skills required to address contemporary engineering challenges.
The research activities of the department encompass a broad spectrum of areas, including Power Electronics and Drives, Power Systems, Control Systems, Instrumentation, Soft Computing Applications, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Systems, High Voltage Engineering, Smart Grid Technologies, Electrical Machines, and other emerging fields of Electrical Engineering. Through its teaching, research, and outreach activities, the department continues to contribute to technological innovation and sustainable development while preparing students to become competent engineers, researchers, and future leaders.
