The National Service Scheme (NSS), under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, was launched in 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi. The programme was initially introduced in 37 universities, involving approximately 40,000 students, with the primary objective of developing students’ personalities through community service.
Today, NSS has grown into one of the largest youth volunteer programmes in the country, with more than 3.2 million student volunteers enrolled across 298 universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorates of Vocational Education. Since its inception, more than 3.75 crore students from universities, colleges, and other institutions of higher learning have benefited from NSS activities as student volunteers.
The NSS was established at NIT Mizoram on 29 August 2017, with two units comprising a total strength of 200 student volunteers. The current NSS Programme Officer is Dr. F. Lalchhandama, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Each academic session, a student coordinator is selected to oversee and coordinate NSS activities at the Institute. In addition, a student core team comprising two representatives from each department is constituted every academic session to support the planning and implementation of various activities.
Over the years, the NSS Unit of NIT Mizoram has undertaken several community-oriented initiatives, including cleanliness drives, the construction of a urinal shed, and blood donation activities.
On 14 and 15 August 2026, the NSS Unit proudly organized a two-day Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign to celebrate the spirit of patriotism, unity, and responsible citizenship. The campaign featured a series of activities, including:
- Tiranga Rally
- Official launch of the campaign by the Director, NIT Mizoram
- Distribution of the National Flag across all departments
- Cleanliness drives to promote a clean, responsible, and environmentally conscious campus
The NSS Unit also plans to organize a blood donation camp, cleanliness drives, and several other community service and social outreach activities throughout the academic year, with the continued aim of fostering social responsibility, leadership, and a spirit of voluntary service among students.
